Course Impact
This course helped me address one of the most terrifying things that we all have to do at one point in time: public speaking. Growing up, my dad used to tell me to just picture everyone in their underwear and it would help to calm the nerves. Never once did that work! And while the days of high school performances and speeches are far behind me, I will never forget the crippling fear I felt in those situations. One thing that differed greatly and was emphasized in this course versus those past public presentations was simply practice. Practicing in front of the mirror, stuffed animal audience, or close family made a huge difference in how prepared I felt to deliver my speeches. Even further, I was able to identify whether my speech was cohesive enough for a general audience. Sometimes we are too close to the topic and may make assumptions that our audience will know what we are speaking about, but practicing with others helps to flush out those grey areas through questions or feedback from those you are practicing with. Overall, this course outlined methodical ways to overcome the fear of being in front of a group, which is positive and will be knowledge carried throughout life in a variety of situations.
